John H. de Jong, DVM, Principal

Dr. John de Jong

John de Jong is owner and founder of Newton Animal Hospital. A 1985 graduate of Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, he has taken on many leadership roles in organized veterinary medicine having served as president of the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association, the New England Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Housecall Veterinarians. He served on the Board of Directors of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), as Chair of the Board 2015-2016, and as President of the AVMA 2018-2019. His primary interest is surgery and he also owns and operates the Boston Mobile Veterinary Clinic. He is a weekly columnist for the Boston Herald and for many years was a monthly talk radio guest on the syndicated Howie Carr Show. Boston Magazine and the Improper Bostonian have both recognized him previously as Boston's Best Veterinarian. His personal interests are politics, fishing, golf and rugby and he enjoys family time with his wife and two sons.

Nicole Santos, DVM

Dr. Santos received her bachelors in biology from Connecticut College in 2007, followed by her DVM in 2011 from The Ohio State University. She has practiced for the last 7 years in several towns and hospitals around the greater Boston area, and is very excited to now call Newton Animal Hospital home! Her professional interests include dermatology, soft tissue surgery and dentistry. In her free time, Dr. Santos enjoys spending time with her husband, brand new baby girl, and her fur babies - her dog Jack and cats Will and Grace.

Samantha Gabree, DVM

Dr. Gabree grew up and has spent the majority of her life in Massachusetts. She had dreamed of being a veterinarian since she was at least 8 years old. She began working in an ER setting as a technician for 8 years throughout her schooling to gain invaluable experience and skills.

Dr. Gabree graduated cum laude from the University of Massachusetts – Amherst in 2013, where she majored in Pre-Veterinary Science and minored in Anthropology. She went on to earn her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in 2017. After veterinary school, she moved to Pittsburgh for her first job as an Emergency Clinician in an ER and specialty facility, where she dealt with a high case load of critical cases. She returned to Massachusetts to work at the same busy ER facility she used to tech at. After spending years in strictly emergency medicine, Dr. Gabree Joins NAH to continue work in Emergency and primary care medicine.

Outside of work, Dr. Gabree enjoys skiing with her family in Vermont and exploring Boston with friends. She has an 11 year old white golden retriever named Mogul.

Sheila Gastrock, DVM

Dr. Sheila Gastrock received her Bachelors of Science Degree from the University of Florida in 2002 Followed by her DVM from St. George’s University school of Veterinary Medicine.

After graduation Sheila transplanted to the Northeast, practicing in New York and New Jersey prior to her move to New England. Her professional accomplishments include opening two veterinary hospitals, mentoring veterinary graduates participating in education media to support preventive medicine, and earning a position as chief prior. Dr. Gastrock is excited to join the Newton Animal Hospital family as an associate veterinarian.

Dr. Gastrock has 10 years of general practice experience and is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Her professional interests include dermatologic disorders, pain management, hospice care, and soft tissue surgery. Dr. Gastrock has spent time consulting with judicial specialist to aid in the prevention of animal cruelty and has a passion for public health and supporting the human-pet bond.

Dr. Gastrock spends her free time with her husband and three children and makes time for yoga and is an active member at her children’s school.

Adam Chouinard, CVT, Veterinary Technician

Adam joined Newton Animal Hospital in December of 2013. He graduated in 1998 from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and began his first career in construction management. After 10 years of working first as an assistant project manager and then as a field superintendent, Adam decided to return to school to turn his love of animals into a new career. He graduated co-valedictorian of his class with a 4.0 from Mount Ida College in 2013 and became a Certified Veterinary Technologist (CVT) in January of 2014. Adam enjoys all aspects of veterinary technology but has a special interest in surgical anesthesia. Adam is a member of the Massachusetts Veterinary Technicians Association. He lives with his two children in Brookline. In his time off, Adam enjoys running and is training for three obstacle course races and his first marathon in 2018.

Kate Beck, CVT, Practice Manager

Kate relocated to the area from Washington State and joined the team in September, 2017. While originally from Pennsylvania, she has lived and worked in many places including Michigan, Colorado, Ohio and Washington state. Kate has worked in veterinary medicine since 2006 and obtained her veterinary technician certification through Bel-Rea Institute of Animal Technology in Denver, CO in 2008. She was previously a weapons systems maintainer for the F16's for the Air Force National Guard, served two overseas deployments and reached the rank of Staff Sergeant in 2015. Kate is a graduate of Colorado State University 2015. She worked as a Veterinary Technician Manager for specialty hospitals, primarily specializing in surgery and anesthesia, for the past 3 years prior to coming to Newton Animal Hospital. In her free time, she loves to travel (20 countries and counting), spend time with her boyfriend and two dogs, Turkey and Claire.

Jackie Higley, Receptionist

Jackie was born and raised in Dedham. She had a golden retriever lab growing up named Skippy who lived to be 16 years old! At a young age Jackie knew she was interested in veterinary medicine. She remembers taking her dog to the vet and always asking a million questions.

Jackie graduated from Dedham high school in 2007 and went off to Cape Cod Community college where she became certified to teach infants, toddlers and preschool. She ended up working with children for over 10 years. In 2015, she made a career change and has worked in the veterinary field ever since. Jackie is happier then ever working at Newton Animal Hospital and can be found greeting clients at the front door.

Jamily Maia, Veterinary Technician

Originally from Brazil, Jamily has always loved animals since she was a little girl. It was her dream to become a Veterinarian, but instead became an interior designer. Jamily moved to the area from California in 2017 where she previously worked at a small hospital. Jamily resides with her son and her 12 year old Schnauzer/terrier mix named Brandy.

Sabrina Miller, Veterinary Technician


Sabrina graduated from Northeastern University with a bachelor's of science degree in biochemistry. After graduating, she worked as a medical tecnologist at a Boston area hospital.Sabrina has always had a vested interest in animals and has gained a diverse volunteer experience with Saveadog, World Vets, and International Volunteers. It is her love of animals and these positive volunteer experiences that led to a career change. In her free time she loves to travel and spend time with her 3 pups: Bianco, Okami, and Bella.

Sandra Richardson, Veterinary Assistant


Growing up in Brookline Sandra has always had a passion and love for animals. She had two huskies growing up and has always had a soft spot for dogs. Originally born in Uganda, Sandra dreams of someday working with big cats and becoming a veterinarian. Sandra graduated with a bachelor’s of science degree in biology from Curry College. She graduated with honors and is a member of the Tri Beta Society, as well as minored in chemistry. When she was not in school Sandra was working as a pet sitter for Rover and a volunteer for the New England Dog Training League. On her off time, she enjoys drawing, listening to music, going to the movies, or hanging out with her kitties Pumpkin and Spice. Always ready for a challenge and eager to learn she can’t wait to work with you and your pet.

Olivia Hapenny, Receptionist


Originally from Cape Cod, Olivia began her career as a Vet Tech when she was just a day over 20. In October of 2017 she moved up to the Boston area to live with her fiancee and after commuting for about a year to the Cape, decided to leave her tech position to join the Newton Animal Hospital Staff as a receptionist. Since a very young age Olivia’s love for animals, especially rescue animals, drew her to the field of Veterinary Medicine. During her free time, she enjoys traveling with her fiancee and spending time with her two yellow labs; Tornado and Kody, as well as her Old English Sheepdog; Holly.

Nattamon Noimameewan Raposo, Veterinary Technician


Newton Animal Hospital is lucky to have Nattamon Naoimameewan Raposo working as a Veterinarian Technician. Known to all as Kaofang, she joined the rest of our talented staff in the fall of 2018. Kaofang is originally from Thailand where she completed her education and training as a Veterinarian. Kaofang currently lives in Boston with her husband. and her dog named Grizzly.
