John H. de Jong, D.V.M, Principal
John de Jong, D.V.M is owner and founder of Newton Animal Hospital. A 1985 graduate of Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, he has taken on many leadership roles in organized veterinary medicine having served as president of the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association, the New England Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Housecall Veterinarians. He currently serves on the Executive Board of the American Veterinary Medical Association. His primary interest is surgery and he also owns and operates the Boston Mobile Veterinary Clinic. He is a weekly columnist for the Boston Herald and is a monthly talk radio guest on the syndicated Howie Carr Show. Boston Magazine and the Improper Bostonian have both recognized him previously as Boston's Best Veterinarian. His personal interests are politics, fishing, golf and rugby and he enjoys family time with his wife and two sons.
Carole Lee de Jong, Principal
Carole de Jong joins her husband as principal and Director of Marketing. A Boston native, Carole spent over twenty years in the radio, print and television advertising sales industry. Her main focus at the hospital will be community outreach, advertising, marketing and creating strategic partnerships within the pet industry in Newton and the greater Boston metropolitan area. She is also buyer for the pet boutique and always on the lookout for one of-a-kind high quality pet merchandise. Her goal is to provide the clients at Newton Animal Hospital with unsurpassed value and resources so that all of your pet needs, education, services and questions are always answered. Carole is also a realtor, an author and a contributor at the Boston Herald. She enjoys tennis, golf, cooking and spending time with husband and two sons.
Jaclyn Spaulding, Practice Manager
When you enter the hospital you will no doubt be greeted by the experienced, and caring Jaclyn Spaulding. Jaclyn was born and raised in South Boston, where she worked both as a veterinary technician and receptionist. From Boston, Jaclyn moved to Hawaii. During her time on the island of Oahu she continued to work in veterinary medicine as a veterinary technician. She lived and worked on Oahu for just shy of 4 years and then moved to California. Jaclyn continued her work as a technician and joined the management team of a small animal/ exotic practice where she stayed for 4 years. We are pleased to announce her arrival here at Newton Animal Hospital as Practice Manager. With her hard work, dedication, and knowledge of veterinary medicine, we know she will meet not only your needs but your furry family members as well. On occasion you may see an appearance of her Golden Retriever named Chevy and African Gray Parrot named Lexi.
Jenny-Ree Hedges, BVMS
Dr. Hedges joined Newton Animal Hospital in January 2014. A 2009 graduate of The University of Glasgow School of Veterinary Medicine, she practiced as a veterinarian in London. In 2013, Dr. Hedges and her husband relocated back to the United States and settled in Massachusetts. Before heading across the pond, she received a bachelor's degree in Animal Science from Rutgers University and worked as a veterinary technician in various practices throughout New York and New Jersey.
Dr. Hedges enjoys all aspects of general practice, but has a particular interest in management of chronic diseases and senior pet care.
Dr. Hedges is a Member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, the British Veterinary Association, and the British Small Animal Veterinary Association. She lives in Watertown with her husband and their Jack Russell Terrier, Pudge.
Katie Holmes, D.V.M.
Originally from Ohio, Dr. Katie Holmes received her D.V.M. degree from the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University in 2013 with a certificate in International Veterinary Medicine. After graduation, she completed a small animal internship at the New England Animal Medical Center in West Bridgewater, MA, where she furthered her training in emergency and critical care, surgery, internal medicine and general practice. Dr. Holmes continued her training in high volume canine/feline spay/neuter surgery with Spay Panama in Panama City. She then worked as a veterinary surgeon and on-site project manager for a pilot canine population management program for Humane Society International in Mauritius. In addition, she is involved in public education through STEM education events as well as outreach opportunities with local schools. Dr. Holmes enjoys painting and photography in her free time.
Adam joined Newton Animal Hospital in December of 2013. He graduated in 1998 from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and began his first career in construction management. After 10 years of working first as an assistant project manager and then as a field superintendent, Adam decided to return to school to turn his love of animals into a new career. He graduated co-valedictorian of his class with a 4.0 from Mount Ida College in 2013 and became a Certified Veterinary Technologist (CVT) in January of 2014. Adam enjoys all aspects of veterinary technology but has a special interest in surgical anesthesia. Adam is a member of the Massachusetts Veterinary Technicians Association. He lives with his wife, two children, a Chinese shar-pei, and a Siamese cat in Brookline.
Lauren joined the Newton Animal Hospital team as an intern in May 2014 and became a part time technician in August 2014. She graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 2012 with an Associates in Animal Science and graduated Mount Ida College in December 2014 with a Bachelors degree in Veterinary Technology. Lauren has completed internships at Natick Animal Clinic, IVG Metro West Emergency Hospital and VCA Brookline Animal Hospital. Lauren is very enthusiastic and passionate in all aspects of animal care including large animals. In Lauren’s free time you can find her on the farm horseback riding or running outdoors with her yellow Labrador retriever named Junior.
Ryan began his career in 2003 in a shelter in New Hampshire. After two years he moved to the Boston area. He continued his work in a shelter environment for another five years during which time he adopted his 2 cats, Aurora, and Sebastian. After the valuable experience he gained in shelter medicine, he decided to expand his experience and worked in a variety of private practices as a veterinary technician. Since then he has been working in private practice not only expanding his skills but attending several veterinary conferences to further his education in the field. His specific interests include dental care and emergency medicine. Ryan currently lives in Watertown with his 2 cats, his dog Katashi, and his newest member, a small conure named Skylar. In his spare time, Ryan enjoys hiking and traveling.
Originally from Argentina and fluent in Spanish, Karolina joined Newton Animal Hospital in October 2014 as a part time veterinary technician. She attended Becker College to pursue her veterinary technician career. Karolina is experienced in both emergency and general practice, and is especially proficient in critical care and anesthesia. She enjoys all aspects of the field of veterinary medicine. Every year Karolina enjoys traveling home to Argentina to visit her family. She lives with her Labrador retriever mix, Yorkshire terrier, and ferret. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her family, her pets and playing video games.
